Well I will start off by saying I am amazed there has not yet been a written
review about this game on PocketGamer.org
as of yet. I would have done so sooner if I thought it was going to be months later and
no word. But hey, better late than never.
I purchased PocketGB about 5 months ago because the whole idea of playing
Game Boy games on my Pocket PC was quite appealing. I did not think then that it would be something
that outlives the lives of most games or programs I have so far ventured into trying. I played around with
PalmGB a bit before PocketGB
and wasn't too impressed, probably because it wasn't created primarily for the
Windows CE environment.
PocketGB, however, solved this problem quite well. I found that even in its earlier stages it ran quite smoothly
- save perhaps with sound enabled - and, as time went on, another strong factor is that the developer continued
the project, making several advancements and offering plenty of support as to make it the superior
program it is today.
Some of the ups about PocketGB include it's
smooth emulating capabilities, very friendly user interface and even the capability to run most
games with sound and not lose too much speed over it. Aaron Oneal, the developer of
PocketGB continuously provides updates to this day and seeing
any developer not abandon a project is always a good and rare quality for any project on the Pocket PC. Another winning element
is the multiple levels of emulation including NES, Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System
and of course both colour, greyscale and Super Game Boy modes.
Although having so many emulators packed into one is a nifty and somewhat handy
idea it does make the emulator a little large for the ol' handheld but perhaps something will be
released later with this in mind. Another downside to the emulator is the small
number of glitches still found from time to time, such as powering down and then on again to find half the screen is white and misplaced.
I suppose the biggest turnoff for most players regarding
PocketGB would be that it has a price tag
attached to it whereas most emulators do not. Fortunately in my using this program for the last 5 months I can easily say
that I have found it well worth the price I paid and am thankful for the constant
support and upgrades that come with it.
So, if you are just itching to purchase a new emulator for your Pocket PC, but
didn't know which one to choose, maybe this one isn't such a bad choice given what it has to offer for
such a small price. Having to give it a rating out of ten I would say 10 when comparing to the other emulators.
I have tried but have to conclude with a nine taking into account the small things that continue to
hinder my complete submission into happiness with PocketGB.
Pros:
Full-screen capability.
Full or near full speed emulation, even with
sound.
Multiple Game Boy formats including superGB,
Game Boy colour, and original.
Friendly user interface.
Constant upgrades and support.
Multiple console emulation.
Cons:
Some glitches still to be worked out.
Price tag (although still worth it).
May be considered too cluttered with other
emulators.
Some saving problems with specific games
(although this is something that is changed daily when problem is met).
